Blu-3 excels on one of Ireland’s largest construction projects

Specialist multi-utility and civil engineering company, blu-3 has been awarded a third phase of works as part of one of Ireland’s largest construction projects to build a new data centre for a global social media organisation.

Situated on the outskirts of Dublin, the build is expected to cost €225 million and covers a 256 acre site. The facility will be powered entirely by renewable energy and will be one of the world’s most advanced data centres.

blu-3 has been on site since November 2015 after being awarded a phase one enabling package to install the infrastructure for the main building works, including site roads, site fencing, drainage, street lighting, accommodation foundation and car park.

The team completed within 18 weeks and was kept on site to install the incoming 355mm water main feed to the site as well as the foul water connection between site and the existing public infrastructure, upgrade existing roads around the perimeter of the site. In addition, on behalf of Meath County Council, blu-3 carried out works to upgrade the main access road to the data centre campus as well as its associated infrastructure.

Phase 2 enabling works began in February, 2017 and included extending the temporary roads and services network on site, creating a secondary site access to the east and relocating site vehicle wheel wash facilities. The works also included the expansion of all previously installed contractor yards and removal of 180,000 cubic meters of soil and sub-soil from the site.

Following the successes of phase one and two endeavours,  blu3 has now been awarded phase three enabling works which will see the team on site into 2019. The works relate mainly to the third of three buildings on the site and include laying foundations and the installation of drainage infrastructure for the main works. It will also involve removing the temporary enabling works put in place for phases one and two.

Richard Killian, International Director at blu-3, said: “This has been an excellent opportunity for blu-3 to demonstrate its expertise and capabilities in managing ambitious programmes with demanding schedules. Data centre builds tend to work to intense timeframes with much shorter turnarounds than other enterprises and this is an area in which we can truly stand out.

''We evidenced our ability to deliver excellent results under such conditions in phases one and two of the undertaking and are pleased to have had our performance rewarded with the award of phase three. To be a part of one of Ireland’s largest ever construction projects is something we are very proud of.”
