Balfour Beatty awarded £43 million contract to deliver phase two of Wapping Wharf project
Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure company, has announced that it has been awarded a £43 million contract by Wapping Wharf Living, a joint venture between developers Umberslade and Muse, to deliver the second phase of Bristol’s Wapping Wharf regeneration project.
Wapping Wharf on Bristol’s harbourside is widely acknowledged as one of the city’s most exciting new neighbourhoods. Comprising over 200 homes and a retail quarter featuring some of the city’s best independent restaurants, shops and cafes, the quarter links the communities of south Bristol with the city centre.
Wapping Wharf Living has secured £23.4 million funding from Homes England towards phase two. The support comes from Homes England’s Home Building Fund, which provides loans to help unlock or accelerate the delivery of residential and mixed-use housing developments.
As part of the works, Balfour Beatty will provide two residential blocks comprising of 256 new homes, four new retail units spanning 659m2, ground level car parking, bicycle storage and landscaping for the new homes.
In addition, Balfour Beatty will retain and restore the early 19th Century, Grade II listed Gaol Gate and Gaol Wall Structures which will act as a pedestrian feature entrance to the residential buildings, reflecting the history and character of the area.
Balfour Beatty has been working in collaboration with Wapping Wharf Living since 2017. Early engagement has enabled the company to play an instrumental part in the design, methodology and logistics of the project.

Works are due to commence next month and are expected to complete in 2020. At construction peak, the programme will employ over 250 individuals, including multiple apprenticeships and graduate positions.
